Fedora has a tool - livecd-iso-to-disk that will take a live fedora image (Which you can either download or build yourself using livecd-creator or Revisor) and convert it to a disk image that will boot from your USB stick. It's super easy to use and very slick. Some people use it to build Rawhide (Fedora Development branch) every few days and test it reporting bugs. Also makes for a very easy to customise recovery system as changing the packages and/or configuration is as simple as updating a kickstart file which just lists the packages and conf options you want.
