I have used loads of editors/ide over the years but I have just settled on Aptana (aptana.org) with the php plugin. Although that might be too heavy for some though as it was primarily created as a javascript editor but it has everything I need now. Before that I was using eclipse php http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/ again a big program for a small job but I found worked really well. If you want something simple then I suggest Bluefish which should be found in most distros http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/ There are so many and it depends on your needs and how you expand with it. But those are my 3 best suggestions.
