A GUI makes things easy so you use it. No more planning! If something is hard/repetitive/boring then you tend to stop and think about how you can do it more efficiently. The man who said genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration was lying - its laziness that drives inovation. People can easily produce more documents than anyone can read nowadays and people think that 'Office' software makes them more productive. It doesn't - if it did we'd all be better off and work less but I seem to remember when I started work you could keep a wife at home and live comfortably. Not any more!
