If the audio is transferred by USB then he's essentially got a second sound card and needs to tell something to actually use that card instead of the onboard one. Actually here's a suggestion- try unloading the module for the onboard sound, and then unload and reload the snd-usb-audio module, so that the USB sound card gets the first alsa slot.
