But I suspect it is to keep the download smaller - and keep it all on one cd but still include maximum packages out of the box. If you look at Mandriva for example or SuSE, then they come on DVD these days - partly because they include different desktops I think. Both KDE and Gnome are pretty large packages when you add in the various libraries. I never use Gnome as a rule, so I prefer to only download KDE - i.e Kubuntu. If I decide to add Gnome, then I can download the Gnome stuff later via the repositories. You can add as many different wm/desktop environments as you like to any Ubuntu variant. But not everyone wants to have the choice - so why download KDE, for example, if you don't like it - but you get no choice with some distros.
