Soon, Emdebian - we have a rootfs that will install in 19Mb (5Mb download) but more work is required to actually get the thing working. This leaves plenty of room on the CF for the applications and could result in a OS that runs almost entirely in RAM - which is important where CF is concerned. You need to ensure that you write to CF as few times as possible - if you can make the CF read-only and put /tmp and /var into a ramdisk, you would have a very responsive unit. The current rootfs (ARM only currently) is also being reduced in size further with the aim of getting below 5Mb (installed size, <3Mb download) by replacing glibc with uclibc, resulting in a rootfs that is just 8 packages, or so. (The rootfs is the core filesystem that allows you into a shell running on that box. It does not include a kernel. Together, the kernel, the kernel modules and the rootfs can provide a basic bootable system.) It could be fun to have a bootable GNU/Linux distro that is not much bigger than a JPEG from a modern digital camera! ;-) <blackhatmode>Here, download this lovely picture of {money, girls, secrets.etc}! {aside}It'll crash your system, install a replacement OS and download loads of free software when you hit the restart button! </blackhatmode> -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/
