Thanks for v. useful response. > I installed spring on my laptop and it was OK. Was this an upgrade or > install? Initially an upgrade from Mandriva Powerpack 2007 to Mandriva 2007 Spring. Then did what the CD called a reinstall but actually went through the same steps as the upgrade. No re-partitioning and no re-installing of /home directory. > Install is often better and /home is all you should need to > backup. Is there a tool or menu option for this? > Really you should take off every thing under /home and save it. I was planning to make a tar archive cd of the /home directory, reformat the hard drive, reinstall the software and then simply extract the tar archive and let it make the new /home directory for me with all the permissions etc kept intact. Isn't that the way it works? > Can I suggest you give PClinuxOS a shot. It's based on Mandriva so > you'll be familiar with all the config options. The latest version of InstallDrake (or DrakConf or whatever they call it) is AWFUL, notwithstanding Mandriva's trumpeting when they rolled it out. > pclos has a really good range of software in the repositories, is pretty > excellent at hardware recognition (about the only distro to automaticaly > recognise my wifi), is neat to navigate and looks good also. I will bear that in mind too. > Simon > > -- > Simon Robert > www.oldhouse-cottage.co.uk Very many thanks.
