If you just enter "local" or "http://local/" it treats it as either a hostname in the current domain (see search in /etc/resolv.conf) or failing that tries to guess what you meant (www.local.com), and then I think it may even go do a search for it if it isn't disabled in the config. So maybe a little bit of magic, but it is configurable magic ;)
