I've now done four upgrades from various directions, including Sarge
to Etch and Sid to Etch. The easiest one was my own
server - I simply changed /etc/apt/sources.list and cron-apt did the
rest. (And yes, it is still running - it's running the DCGLUG website!)

The ONLY problem is: Use a 2.6 kernel BEFORE the upgrade, or at the
very least a 2.4 kernel and then upgrade to 2.6 inside Etch. You MUST
be running at least a 2.4 kernel to upgrade to Etch. (glibc reasons).

I tried to start with a 2.2 kernel on one box and got into a real tizz
where I had to downgrade to Sarge (oldstable) to install a 2.4 kernel,
upgrade to Etch and then to a 2.6 kernel.

As ever, remember to make sure that things like lilo actually WORK
after installing a new kernel - I had a nasty surprise with one box
when I forgot that I'd tweaked /etc/lilo.conf to boot from the second
harddrive and referring to the OLD kernel image!!

So get your kernel sorted in advance, then upgrade and everything else
falls into place.

I had no problems that could not be attributed solely to running a
v.old kernel in each case.

Note, however, that the 2.2 box shows how long Linux can run without a
reboot! I installed that box in about 2001 and it simply hasn't needed
a new kernel until now.
