Matt is referring to binary blobs of non-free software shipped in the Linux kernel within Debian GNU/Linux. Not "non-free" but stuff in mainstream Debian. Debian has again decided they will ship these in Etch. There are a fair few mainstream network cards and other things that only work with non-free firmware loaded, so not shipping it would break quite a lot of Debian installs. Matt is wrong, just not in this way ;)
