I have moved a winxp hard drive from a broken computer to one we scrounged and it just worked. It was probably down to luck more than anything else, but it meant we could demonstrate our project at uni so i was happy. More usefully, I boot the same copy of win2k natively and in vmware and keep swapping between them. It took a bit of effort, but nothing any more complicated than googling "vmware windows boot from existing partition". It basically say to use the hardware profiles feature. I think the only issue is that you have to make sure (or just hope in my case) that you have all the right drivers installed (particularly for the IDE/SCSI and presumably SATA controller). It apparently works with XP too. I think the reason for using the hardware profiles is so it won't autodetect each time then ask you to reboot.
