The problem isn't with USB-Serial as such - that has worked since kernel 2.4 (Debian Sarge) because pilot-link devices use it. The problem is that each USB-Serial device normally comes with it's own cable (NOT dongle, just the cable). Intrinsically, there isn't anything special about converting USB to Serial (USB=Universal Serial Bus). Have you tried looking for *just* the cable? Avoid anything that mentions a chipset, try a bog standard USB cable that ends in an RS232.
