It has the great advantage of automatic updates, so that it will notice when a new version of a program is available and ask you whether you want to upgrade to it. In ubuntu, there is a simple interface to apt in the Applications menu, called 'Add/Remove Applications'. There are other ways to install programs, but this is probably the simplest. Hope this helps, and welcome to (GNU/)linux!
