Quite a few such connectors appear to be poorly engineered.

Just as well, since laptop boards tend to be in the several hundreds of
pounds range.

Wonder if all these boards which get replaced get thrown away or if they
get passed to the service people who are competent to use a soldering iron.

IME it appears rather hard to get hold of the connectors, even though
they must be being made by the thousand somewhere.
