There isn't much we can do about the JMRI project - the software authors are in the USA and bound by US law, which is utterly broken, but especially so in regards to patents. All we can do is try to prevent it getting as bad here, although software patents are not allowed in the UK or EU, they have been registered and some judges and Patent Officers have unfortunately allowed some to even stand.
