I have installed it on my laptop too (running Dapper, but no 3d acceleration - a rubbish SiS chip). Ubuntu uses a different runlevel setting than Mandriva. In mandriva, the full GUI boot would be runlevel 5 if I recall correctly, but in Ubuntu releases, it is - I think - runlevel 2.
