Neil, it would appear that Edgy is merely buggy as hell and the version of OOO included may not be entirely functional as of yet. Have you filed a bug report, attempted running from the CLI to view text-out-only errors generated, etc? Base usually works for me, although I've never actually had to use it for anything serious.
