If your router is set up properly then plugging in other systems will
just work. I presume its all dynamic ip and the router is dishing out
IP addresses, if so just plug in and go.

If you have booted a live cd and internet is all ok then its fine.

It might not be installed as default, the buntus are all deb packaged
based so it should be easy to add in gnome if you want with a simple
apt-get or even via the graphical package manager (kpackage?)

Not necessarly, no reason why gnome/gtk based apps will not run on kde
and kde/qt based apps will not run on gnome as long as the base
libraries are there and frankly they would be nuts not to have the
base libs installed. Again a simple apt-get or kpackage hack would
install the correct libs.

If you "apt-get install gnucash" for example and it depends on gtk
libs that you don't have apt-get will install them all for you and it
should all *just* work, cause thats the debian way and kubuntu is a
child of debian.
