[LUG] DNS & Bittorrent

Hi

I have noticed that whenever I try to use a bittorrent client on Linux, my network connection (even to the router) slows to a crawl and the whole thing is unusable from when I open the client to when I close it. This doesn't affect Windows and happens on every torrent program I use.
My friend says "windows is likely using SNMP or whatever to find an external server, while linux is firing everything at 192.168.1.1 and expecting it to redirect the request" which is probably correct, but doesn't know how to change it on Debian derivatives (he's a Fedora user) and Google is similarly unhelpful. Can anyone assist in this? I want my out-of-copyright classical music!
