Hi, I'm looking for someone who may be able to carry out various support type jobs. Currently I carry out programming work in PHP but I am also installing Debian email, Samba and database type servers as and when they are required. These are supported remotely via VPN's etc. I need help with supporting these installations and also when I am on site I always get asked to look into other (usually Windows) issues which clients are happy to pay someone to look into. I can virtually always connect remotely as I usually set up VPN's to the clients' sites and all relevant PC's have VNC installed and obviously I can log in to the Debian servers via ssh. As I can't afford to take on someone full-time just yet I was hoping to find someone who can work either from home or come to my place for a couple of hours a day and carry out the work required. The clients are ok to pay for someone to look into their issues which means in turn I can pay someone to carry out the work. I am set up as an employer so I could pay via PAYE or pay on an invoice. I have online ticketing, accounts and notes systems and for all my installs I write up notes on to my twiki notes system. This means that the passwords and network details etc are easily accessible and searchable. Likewise for the server setups I keep notes of how the server was set up and copy in relevant snippets from the conf files. The current jobs outstanding are: * A windows Fax program has horrible error message and won't run - probably needs a reinstall. * Act CRM program will not install due to thinking it is already installed - probably needs some registry entries removed. Or the PC reinstalled. If not, then could possibly convert the client to an OS based solution which could be on their server which I installed a few months ago to run their email. * A client just phoned this one as I am typing! A VPN to Santiago is working and we can control one of their PC's via VNC and open up the PC's shares - however, that PC can not open shares back in the Plymouth office. I have complete control and login details for the routers involved. * Client has bought a small printer which needs sharing out on a Windows network. * Client may call and ask for another authenticated share to be set up on the Samba server. * UPS needs ordering and installing at another site to go with an already installed Debian server. This has been carried out before so notes are available. * Wireless network card needs installing on a Windows PC and it preferably needs to run without logging in as the administrator initially. Initial skills needed are general Windows stuff and networking. Skills which would be a bonus are Debian administration, the ability to install Debian on servers and good bash scripting skills. Skills which would be really extra useful are Samba, Postgresql, server security. Extra, extra useful would be the ability to write high quality software using PHP, PEAR, Smarty, comments, documentation, properly named variables and correct indentation. Type of person needed is someone living in Plymouth who would be able to communicate well with clients. Ability to drive would be a bonus. This would hopefully turn into a full-time, long term position with a yearly profit share. The aim is to provide businesses in Plymouth with good quality IT support and help to build up their IT infrastructure on good quality hardware and software. The networking should be high quality and servers should be set up with proper redundancy and backup routines. I am primarily a programmer and think that businesses are short changed by the poor quality of most software supplied so another aim is to supply bespoke applications or good quality OS software applications which are well designed, reliable and easy to use. Generally Linux (primarily Debian) would be used on servers as this is a high quality operating system with a huge library of available applications. If Windows servers are needed then I have contacts who can look after them. I am also very interested in promoting the use of Asterisk and LTSP for businesses. There could well be requirements for running Vmware to enable legacy Windows applications to run on servers and I'm also interested in the Novell server/workstation stack as required Please contact me on 01752 268923 or at kbailey@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if your are interested now or may be interested in the future. BTW - If you already have an income then it is easy for me to sort out pay as an extra income and everything is correctly registered with the tax man - I have set this up before for someone. The main requirement currently is to have some hours available every week to look into the list of outstanding issues.
