Could it be a disk > space issue? > For some reason KDE is failing to start and so you're being dumped back to kdm. If your disk is full, this could be the reason. It could also be down to permissions, if for some reason KDE can't create the temporary files it needs in your home directory or in /tmp. Check the X log in /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what the output from KDE is.
