I have had a lot of help so far, thanks to all who have written. The concensus so far seems to be as follows. I boot up the computer with the router off, either because it was already off or because I switch it off first. Once the computer is ready I switch on the router. Once it has settled down everything works fine, for as long as I need it to. Or I boot the computer with the router already running. Now when I try to access the internet I cannot, although the icon on the panel says 'Network is up on interface eth0'. So I switch off the router for a while, then turn it back on and once it has settled down everything works. I know that I could use the first method every time, but I like to keep the router running all day because my wife uses her laptop downstairs and links to the internet from the same router (the router is a wireless router, and yes it has worked fine all along for the laptop). Also of course I don't like to be beaten with mysteries like this, I need to know how to solve it. The router is obviously working fine. Something happens when the router is switched on *after* the computer which doesn't happen when it is fired up first. And it is only in the last week that it has all gone wrong. For three months everything was fine. And no, I have not touched anything with the internet connection at all. As one final cry for help, can anyone suggest where I should look, or what I can do please?
