Rich, Although the kernel has identified the scanner, it doesn't follow that it will actually work :( Some do, some need work and some simply won't work. The kernel takes the vendor ID and product ID and runs them against a database I guess - which then allows your distro to tell you that you have plugged in a SuperDuper Model x scanner from Howling Placard or whatever. It doesn't follow that the fact that it is identified means it will work. I get this a lot with webcams - my distro recognises the name/model of the webcam - but it won't work! What make/model is it? That would be a good starting point. There are lots of lovely command line tests you can run in sane to check if the scanner is actually likely to work, but the name/model is the best start I reckon. Once we have that, its fairly easy to google around on the Linux USB site for instance to discover the information on whether it will work. Many sane/xsane installs do not have the modules for all scanners enabled - or even installed. If they exist, they are easy to enable or install though :) -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
