Server does not just mean internet based ones. many large organisations still use windows at the backend. the sick ones use AS's :) Most companies that use windows at the backend do so because development is easy. With linux just approaching some sensible level of development, it's got a fighting chance of gaining majority share. However, .NET is a very sleek, and very well designed development environment for both application and web development - something that linux does not have for the "average" developer. If i had to deploy a web application in a corporate environment with the least possible effort, i'd be very tempted to chose C# and .NET with an IE 6 frontend. Why? Because it's simple, and damned fast. And not though lack of not knowing languages. I'd consider myself an expert in C, C#, C++, Perl, PHP, and know Python + Java fairly well. I know ruby to an extent. I think you entirely missed the point of my posts. all of which are trying to get people to stop bashing microsoft, not about the "non-existent improvements of Microsoft's software over open-source equivalents" I note with interest that you did not having any retorts on any of the comments related to the reason for the posts, instead only my suggestions at the end for what people could do instead spending their time bashing microsoft, in turn bashing microsoft yourself. which were just that - suggestions in how to vent your passion for linux, rather than claiming how great microsoft's new products - which i've not even tried - are. remember - microsoft are a business, and their job is to serve their shareholders. Shareholders want market dominance. they get that by making sure their products are at least as good as, if not better than their competitors. so, they're obviously going to make sure that happens - and they have the manpower to, too along with some of the greatest minds [1]. Linux advocates need to make sure that linux is better than windows in ALL areas, not just server (internet), server (backoffice), or desktop, or development environment - but all of them - and CONSTANTLY stay on top. I'm not going to try Vista, as i have better things to do with my time. but i can sure as hell guarantee you can identify things in it that the linux desktop can benefit from - and you successfully managed to not identify a single one. so either you're stupid, or blinded by your own zealotism (is that even a word? :)). One of the most important skills of writing software specifications is being able to sit back, play with a competitors piece of software, and identify what is good, and what is bad with it. Even the worst pieces of software in the world have some (albeit probably accidental) good ideas in them. While you may not want to be a software developer, it's something anyone can do to help the linux desktop improve. ~ Theo 1 - well, Google have the best ones now :) -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
