As usual Neil Williams hits the nail on the head. When I was, for my sins, an office sysadmin I used to tell "my" users that mail programs included the message replied to for no good reason, except to help the user to reply to specific points made by the correspondent, in the interspersed manner that Neil recommends. All the quoted material outside those specific points was /meant to be edited out/. I also used to tell them that if they persisted on leaving the whole quote in place (whether at the top or the bottom), they would in the course of a moderately lengthy correspondence use up all the space and the bandwidth available in the world for e-mail. (This was some years ago.) My mailer actually asks me if I want to include the original message in the reply, and won't proceed till I say yes or no. I try to say no, as now.
