I read somewhere that DRM is coming to Vista with a vengeance. If your graphics card does not have build in drm you can only watch stuff in low res - and yes that includes your own media unless you pay to have it signed! So even if you own a fantastic HD DVD you wont be able to watch it in full res on your PC in case your a pirate who will of course be able to bypass the DRM anyway. For some reason they don't shout about that! But think about it - how else can you get DRM to work unless you stop people watching non signed media? You surely cant let them have control of their own PC!
Yeah that seems to be the case. The document with the nitty-gritty is at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/stream/output_protect.mspx Specifically section 2.4 - It seems they hope to eventually phase-out analog outputs by eventually turning them off, but in the mean time just have the option of reducing the resolution. Additionally, it seems that it (Vista) will utilize PKI and shutdown and lock the DRM material if your hard-drive tries to export/copy the data. My opinion is the amount of lobbying/government intervention/effort that has gone in to DRM to protect people from themselves is diabolical. - The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
