Thank you- that was exactly what I was looking for.Based on the other comments I think I should probably see if I can make the software run on IPs rather than device names. Ah- now I remember why I have these networking problems in the first place- I have a dynamic internet IP.
I think I need to read up on udev- looks useful for distinguishing between all my dynamic storage devices.
