I decided on a company and signed up - subject to the test of my line being successful. Needless to say, the test failed - I was about 0.5km too far from the exchange apparently. I rang BT to ask about this ( the ISP I had chosen was not BT). Being unhappy with the excuse from the poor guy on the end of the phone, I asked to speak to a supervisor. A lady came on who *suggested* that I applied for BT broadband - explaining that BT could sort out the line noise for me *if* I went with BT! Naughty! I didn't go with BT and waited a couple of months longer until the arbitary distance was removed anyway. On the provider front, I have Pipex - but I would not recommend them any longer. Their connection is very good - but try ringing their support line and you wait for ages and ages - then, if the time goes to 5pm or whatever home time is, they simply cut you off and leave you with a message asking you to call back tomorrow. For my needs, I find them quite expensive - I can only get 512k here and when they upped the lines to 1mb, they offered me a concession of couple of quid off the price per month - but still far more than most other providers! Only the reliable service and no capping keeps me with them.
