Back in my suse days I used to have to do this a lot as a problem (I sure I asked for help on it here some time ago) meant that with X running I could not see ordinary consoles (framebuffer issue so I'm told) but when a game locked up and It wouldn't let me restart X I got very used to switching to a blank terminal logging in as root then issuing "shutdown -r 0"
