They had evidently "fixed" something in one of the libraries used by BIND 9. Caused it to crash. I thought maybe a source code version issue, but even when the latest version was built from source it still crashed and burned, hence the assumption it was a library (or possibly a kernel) issue. I suspect I just had some bad luck with Ubuntu, I've used the LiveCD extensively for rescuing, demoing etc. and had few issues of any kind.
