I've found toms root/boot disk a great help if I can't load the OS. Get it from http://www.toms.net/rb/ It is a basic linux OS on a floppy disc, you boot it up, mount your own root disc on /mnt then do what you like with it. I always keep a copy handy. No CD needed.
