Well mbox is for people who don't really want to keep their email safe, so they are probably use to the odd problem ;) I have one remaining user with dovecot and mbox using IMAP (on an old Redhat box), and he gets a lot of big emails, and his trash folder fails about once a month. That isn't exactly the version in Debian stable I don't think, but they are the same vintage. You might have less issues with POP3 than I have with IMAP, as obviously the behaviour is quite different. Where I've used maildir with dovecot in Debian stable, I've never seen one issue with mailboxes - it "just works" and keeps on working.
