It should come into it's own if you ever have more than 4 GB of RAM! The CPUs themselves are fast, so it'll be faster, but 64 bit addressing, and instructions has taken a long time in coming, in part that we are only just getting to the limits of 32bit. I mean how many people could afford more than 4GB of RAM a few years back? With many processors there are often things they are specifically good at aside from just the addressing, typically it is things like multimedia features, you want to make sure those applications are optimised for the hardware if you care about things like DVD playback. I have a machine here that has various multimedia hardware features for which Alan Cox had done some special drivers, but these weren't in the distros when I bought the box. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
