Is this a laptop per-chance? Go to http://www.linux-laptop.net/ and search.

If it's anything like my old Advent laptop, the three digit string is 791.

I'd rather you didn't have to find that by going from 000 to 790 and giving 
up!

At the very least, that site could give you some starter values.

(also note, there is no space after the equals sign: vga=791 )
