Thanks everyone for your advice.
At least Tom Brough has shown it's possible with Linux and I've found his comments in the archive.
It surprises me how little practical advice there is on the Net ref. video conferencing with Linux but I think I might have gleaned enough info to give it try. Probably with Gnomemeeting although if I have time I'll also try Konference.
My kernel is 2.6.8 and as time might be short I'll have to forego Tom's webcam suggestion and instead get a camera which has a driver I know will work with my present kernel.
If I get the conferencing up and running I'll write up a screed and post it for the archive as I should have a few weeks of free time once we're settled in.
