The Apache Directive You Are Looking For is ProxyPass.

Forget mucking about with rewrite and virtual domains.

just use :

<VirtualHost ..>
...
ProxyPass /somepath/ http://some.other.machine:1234/somepath
ProxyPassReverse /somepath/ http://some.other.machine:1234/somepath
...
</VirtualHost>
