[LUG] Linux promition and educating about the problems with Windows.
Hi
I now have two friends who both have Windows XP, both have a computer
infested with viruses, spyware, and other nasties. So I am going to try
and help them by installing Linux or at least dual boot their systems,
I can install kanotix on systems that have ADSL, I can also install
open source software, such as Firefox / Thunderbird and some sort of
anti virus, anti spyware software on the windows partition. However to
help prevent problems just coming back.
Does anyone know of a site or anywhere that:-
1) explains what a virus, spyware, etc are
2) explains why / how computers become infected
3) explains why something like Firefox / Thuderbird are a better option
4) also explains the difference between admin and user accounts on a
Windows XP (or any) system so people know the difference and know when
to use the different account types.
5) Explains what a firewall is, and how using one can help to prevent
problems above, and how using an anti virus package can help.
6) Explains why for most people Linux is a REAL alternative and how to
get help,
It seems to me, we have lots of nice courses such as CLAIT / ECDL and
all these promote Windows, and none explain the the above properly and
especially regarding ADSL connections.
The above would also help me greatly when trying to convince people it's
a good idea to try out Linux or some open source software.
Perhaps we could come up with something tomorrow night if there is time
and I will produce a simple PDF flyer that can be downloaded by group
members and handed to friends,
Thanks
Paul
