www.aria.co.uk That was just an advert in Micro Computer Mart, but as luck would have it, they're who i've normally ordered from for years and years too... Only thing that concerned me was that it has three fans in it. I could live with the slimline optical bay as i could just get a USB2 caddy for my DVD writer, and i don't HAVE to have SATA, i was just wandering if NOT having SATA was such a good move since i'd want the next machine to keep me going for about 2 years like the shuttle has. Other than that, it would fit my my furniture very well, AMD64 seems to be pretty well supported by linux, as does NVidia kit so i'm guessing it could be quite a good buy and since the memory and HDD from the shuttle would drop right in, it wouldn't actually be all that pricey. Just wandering :) Martin. On Sunday 20 March 2005 23:59, Rob Beard wrote:
Hi Martin, By the looks of the manual I guess it would be pretty quiet. Have you found a UK supplier for these? Only thing I could find was a trade supplier or a pre-built system. From experience, my Athlon 64 3000+ is pretty quiet. I wouldn't say its ultra quiet but I think some of that is down to the standard AMD cooler I am using with a Q-Tec 350W PSU. As far as I know, the Cool & Quiet technology makes a bit of a difference, I can't say I've noticed myself with two kids running around I can't hear the PC at the best of times :-) Rob Martin White wrote:Hello people, I was recently installing Gentoo and while sitting there waiting for it to compile for donkey's i figured i'd come along and sign up to the DCLUG... I live in Honiton and have used linux on and off since slackware 3.2 / mid 90's. 1995(? who knows!) I've used quite a few different linux's but have always gone backwards and forwards between that and windows because something, somewhere will always prevent me from going over completely - i'm also a developer by trade and until probably the last six months that had been 100% windows. So anyway, i've currently just gone back to linux (gentoo as mentioned) and will try my best this time to make it stick even if i have to do it via emulation. Onto the opinion bit. It's becoming apparent that the shuttle pc that i have (SN41G2) is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. I've twice now had to vacuum the thing out to unclog it (from dust) and redo the thermal paste on the CPU to keep the temperatures at bay. And compiling up gentoo made it painfully obvious that the Athlon XP processor doesn't cut it quite as well as i'd like it to (even if it's quite powerful by some peoples standards!) I'm therefore looking for something new. Would like AMD64, probably SATA. Must be NEAR SILENT if at all possible. Saw an IWILL ZPC64 in a mag yesterday. Anyone got any experience of them? I don't think they're SATA, but other than that. Noisy? Failing that, any opinions on very quiet AMD64 stuff. Needs to be either shuttle size or at least small, just because of my desk (or lack of!) Anyways, enough for now. Sorry for waffling. Martin. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
