My selfish interest is that I use plenty of GPL'ed software, and I am concerned with its function, but as for the Linux, I use it, but it is by and large irrelevant to most of what I do.Actually I have been wondering to myself recently about whether DCFSUG would be an appropriate title (doesn't exactly roll off the tongue though does it?), as in Free Software User Group. I think this is actually quite descriptive of what we are and do, since we don't just focus on [Gnu/]Linux but also on all the Free Software around the OS. But I fear this would confuse people even more than DCGLUG would... David.
I understand the principle behind *potentially* dropping the idea of being a Linux User Group since we rarely discuss kernel issues, however I am not sure that it'll do us any favours. It's all about recognition. People have heard about "Linux", but they may not have heard about GNU. Unless they understand/have been taught about Freedom, using the term "Free Software" *does* confuse people initially. I am happy with *adding* to the title, but I do not think that the Linux element should be removed. Anyone remember my previous example of what we *could* call ourselves? "We could call ourselves the LGfUoGFaOSSaT (Local Group for Users of GNU, Free and Open Source Softwares and Technologies) if it really came to it, although I have to admit that perhaps it would be a bit of a mouthful compared to LUG and GLUG!"
