First thing first, though. The system comes with an ESS1869 sound
controller. Try as I might, I can't get this thing to work without it causing a complete kernel freeze at some point or other (usually if I try using mplayer with it). I can't get the ESS module(s) to work at all, and the SB module is the only things that works... but then causes the freeze. It's picked up nicely with *lspnp* but isn't listed with *pnpdump* (infact, nothing is listed with pnpdump). Anyone got any ideas? IIRC most ESS sound cards were/are software, ie minimal hardware onboard run by software to fake the system into using what hardware is there as a soundcard. They *did* once produce a modem which was *shudder* a software sound card pretending to make the right noises for a modem. Oddly enough they were stunningly unreliable.. oh and they hogged system resources like nothing on earth. In short Grant, I think you're in with "WinModem of the sound cards" territory, ie stony ground. Hopefully I'm wrong :) Kind regards, Julian -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
