Not the whole file, please. Put it on a website somewhere - the Wiki isn't suitable because it will convert a lot of the X content into Wiki content.
Question: where is the XF86Config-4 file?
/etc/ or /etc/X11/ Look in the xconfig logs to see which location is being used. /var/log/XFree86.0.log (==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Sun Jan 2 01:27:59 2005 (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
and where can I learn how to amend it
Use the comments and the school of hard knocks. Oh and Google. OR use xf86config: "This program will create a basic XF86Config file, based on menu selections you make. The XF86Config file usually resides in /usr/X11R6/etc/X11 or /etc/X11. A sample XF86Config file is supplied with XFree86; it is configured for a standard VGA card and monitor with 640x480 resolution. This program will ask for a pathname when it is ready to write the file. You can either take the sample XF86Config as a base and edit it for your configuration, or let this program produce a base XF86Config file for your configuration and fine-tune it. Before continuing with this program, make sure you know what video card you have, and preferably also the chipset it uses and the amount of video memory on your video card. SuperProbe may be able to help with this." Be aware though that xf86config can ask some seriously techy questions about your monitor and graphics card and the final file is still not guaranteed to work. Use backup files and once you've got one that works, back it up immediately. -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.dcglug.org.uk/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/isbnsearch/ http://www.williamsleesmill.me.uk/ http://www.biglumber.com/x/web?qs=0x8801094A28BCB3E3
