I may have misunderstood, most of the Prism cards can be driven from the kernel drivers, so in general all that was needed was to install the card, and set the settings.
Not sure if this applies to USB, as never had a USB wireless prism card to try.

It is in recent 2.4 kernel, I believe earlier kernels had a prism.o - which made it kind of obvious.
The orinoco driver has long supported Prism II PCMCIA cards, in the old versions with a warning that it isn't the correct driver ;)
