Have you tried adding debug to the pppd.options file /etc/ppp/ppp.options?, if i recall and looking for any naughtyness from pppd in the syslog. You might have a LCP (link control protocol) problem, ie not getting a LCP ack and hanging the connection, i had this once, but the syslog *should* tell you more and indicate a direction to investigate..
