I'm using Mandrake 10.0 community at the moment. reading through the docs
a
month or so after I bought it I notice that I voided the warranty by
loading
a new OS on the beast. I suppose I should sue, but I'm too lazy...
Hi John, Thanks for the advice. I'm using the same OS as you so that sounds hopeful :) This one doesn't have wireless capability built in (for the price you can't expect everything :)). I'm curious about your comment on the warranty though. I sent a speculative email to Compaq and had this in reply: "In response to your email, if you install a different operating system on one of our notebooks you will lose the preinstalled software [bit of a no-brainer there!] and HP will not support the new operating system [even if I install it from drivers off their own website, such as the Win2K drivers?]. Also, if any hardware faults occur you will need to restore the system to its original operating system before sending it for repair." The [] are my comments. This reads to me that they *will* repair hardware faults, provided the machine is sent back with the original OS installed. Assuming it wasn't the HD, then I would think simply using the Restore disks supplied would render it applicable to the warranty. After all, if you buy the machine with Windows XP (or whatever) pre-installed, and then load Linux, if you then *reload* Windows XP from the original disks before returning the item how would the manufacturer know, and would they really care? It's just another box of bits to them. Kind regards, Julian -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
