No reason to learn Exim. Although the packaging for Exim does allow some simple configuration of Exim on install, where as Postfix is basically go edit the /etc/postfix/* files (or install something to do it for you).
Then if you know what you want in the files - you probably don't care about this.

Which will remove Exim and install Postfix for you, which is probably what you want it to do.
The packages declare that they both provide "mail-transport-agent", and other packages that require MTAs will depend on that.
I think this is what the Debian fanatics have been trying to tell people here. The other distros are trying to catch up fast on the packaging front, but to make it works requires a lot of detailed packaging and testing, so I think it will take them a while.
