That's probably your original problem. If you backup a directory tree to CD and the mount the CD to restore, all the files are going to be read-only (inheriting that property from the medium). If you have the space, build an archive using tar (or cpio, or whatever) before copying it to the CD, thus preserving permissions.
Regrettably I had the same problem with Mandrake 10 having backed up my Evolution installation. My backup however was to a local partition that was not going to be erased, not to CD. That too seemed to be a permissions issue. In my case I had inadvertently reinstalled with a different username. However despite changing ownership of the files to the new user the problem persisted. Eventually I resolved it by the following: 1. Recreate the old username again. 2. Run Evolution once and just set it up with a basic install of one email account. 3. Close Evolution and import the backed up files. In my case it all worked from then on, even all my old filters which was handy as they took ages to create! In your case Peter you may still have issues with the Read Only files. I would suggest copying the backup off the CD onto the hard disk first, change permissions of the backup file as a whole to r/w (I hope the file itself is what is R/O and not every individual file - would not changing the parent to r/w also change the files within?) and then unpack it as I did. The following URL contains the instructions I followed, along with advice for CD backups. It is specifically for Evolution. http://www.sm6rpz.se/evolution.html Good luck!
