thanks for the suggestions so far Dave (who has been VERY impressed how well this Debian box has run. 4 weeks 24/7 uptime so far with no problems!)
Before I went away, my Debian stable box had been running 24/7 for 174 days. It would have been longer but I had to do some re-wiring of the mains sockets in the office. My Debian unstable workstation had also been running 24/7 for about 80 days. When running Debian like that, make FULL use of cron and cron-apt. There's no point in spending 'waking time' running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. I use bash scripts with cron to do all those user maintenance tasks like archiving mail, refreshing GnuPG keys etc., as well as helping with the isbnsearch project. (And invest in a good UPS, a quieter fan and/or a draught-seal on the door between the computers and any bedrooms.) As I mentioned here at the time, I've got the network switch and the broadband router now running off the UPS as well using a simple trailing socket from B&Q attached to the end of an ordinary power extension cable from the UPS. The minimal power required is not going to be a problem for the UPS but the continuous internet connection is a major bonus to the running boxes. -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.codehelp.co.uk/ http://www.dclug.org.uk/ http://www.isbn.org.uk/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/isbnsearch/ http://www.biglumber.com/x/web?qs=0x8801094A28BCB3E3
