Knoppix (and some others) has a function specifically to do this built in.

My concern would be how to get updates - the beauty of Debian as a
distro is the ease with which you can update it and maintain new
versions, my guess is the Knoppix distro (which is Debian based) will
have a less well maintained set of repositories, or a set which are
focused on building working livecd's. Still you can always track down
some Knoppix users and ask how well it works running from hard disk.

Debian installs really aren't as hard as some people like to give the
impression, and there are plenty of people here willing to help.
