I wouldn't expect too much of Debian and apt-get, it may be great in a lot of ways but last time I tried upgrading KDE with it I had a lot of problems and eventually had to downgrade again (which wasn't easy either).
As long as you keep /etc/apt/sources.list up to date and in sync with the actual distribution in use, these kinds of problems are taken care of upstream. From Debian stable (the default install), you need apt-get dist-upgrade testing (or unstable): # apt-get update (always your first apt command) # apt-get upgrade (get in sync before expecting a distro upgrade) # apt-get dist-upgrade testing You shouldn't expect to be able to upgrade a specific package until it is in the package list for the correct distro. All the problems I've had with apt-get have been NOT using apt-get update first. (As Simon is always reminding me!) If there are problems, file a bug-report! I did when a KMail upgrade didn't make a clean job of updating the kmailrc config - one simple query and the answer came back.
