I've just inherited a whole load of domains to sort out, mosts of which are reasonably configured, but enough have little 'oddities' to make it a project rather than a five minute job..... The basics of DNS are fairly simple, and there is a lot to be said for sticking with the simple stuff, most of my postings to the BIND list are about avoiding anything complex. Whilst complexity and reliability, aren't always enemies, they aren't the best of friends either. Whilst I work with signed dynamic updates here, dynamic DNS is really a solution looking for a problem, Microsoft's name resolution problems were so great they opted for it, but very few other people are trying to use it in anger, even fewer succeed. > I assume that I could > play it either way, giving every advertising host the same address, or > retaining the class A network of them. If you go with BIND, or a server that requires (or accepts) zone file syntax for input (which despite it's shortcomings is a standard most DNS servers will import), you are likely to need a zone file for every such server. Not hard if you write yourself (beg borrow or steal) a "zone add" script, but not elegant either. Not quite sure what you've got against advertisers, they fund some of the best value websites in the world ;), but if you must try fiddling with HTTP I'd strongly suggest doing it in SQUID or some other layer 7 application that understands what is going on, rather than in an unrelated application which could have unintended side effects. Me I just kill the adverts which open Javascript pop-ups in the browser settings, I exercise a certain amount of cookie control manually, which is less tedious now the browsers remember your decisions, and read around the remaining adverts. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQE/sUkkGFXfHI9FVgYRAtg9AJ4lZnf6QRDKhX0B4gyDkDel3/yUjACfROBh L2Rs0tt+GYLYZ9l5DMcekNA= =sA7b -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG Mail majordomo@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe list" in the message body to unsubscribe.
